Boys Basketball Victory in First Round

The Maywood Academy Nighthawks soared past the Aspire Ollin Jaguars on their first round playoff game with a score of 70-61 on Friday, February 14th.

Maywood Academy’s Boys Basketball Team is ranked #1 in the CIF LA City Section 2020 Boys’ Championships playoff bracket. On Friday, they went head to head with the 16th seed Aspire Ollin at MaCES High School. This was a highly anticipated game where many Maywood students and Aspire Ollin supporters went to cheer on their teams. 

Though this was a close game, Maywood started off strong with a 21-12 lead in the first quarter. Aspire responded by outscoring Maywood in both the second and third quarter (Q2 19-15, Q3  19-14). At the end of the third quarter, Aspire was up 50-48.

Leading scores for Maywood were #24 Damien Olmos with 2o points, #34 Julian Lopez with 15 points, and #22 Andrew Camarena with 14 points.

“I felt great after the win. Any playoff win is awesome. In sports, especially playoffs nothing is guaranteed.” said John Delgado, coach for Maywood. 

“I definitely believe in my team, I always do.”

The Maywood Academy Nighthawks have advanced to the quarterfinal round of playoffs and will face the Franklin High School Panthers Today February 19th at 7:00 pm at Huntington Park High School.
